Time and Space?

In the messages log for an AlphaServer 1000 4/250 running 4.0D I found the
following:

Jun 8 10:16:28 a1 vmunix: /disk2: optimization changed from TIME to SPACE
Jun 10 21:32:12 a1 vmunix: /disk2: optimization changed from SPACE to TIME

Any ideas what that means?
