Thanks to everyone for the overwhelming response!

The solution is to use the no rewind device: /dev/ntape/tape0

Subject: /sbin/vdump

Hi Managers

I have a problem with vdump:

I am running Compaq Unix v5.1 on an ES40. I have executed the following
command:

/sbin/vdump -C0UNf /devices/tape/tape0 /
i.e. I want to do a level 0 dump of / to the tape0 device with compression,
no rewind and no unload of tape.
When I execute the command, I get the following error message:

Memory fault(coredump)

...and the dump aborts.

I realized that if I remove the N option (no rewind), I do not get this
message anymore but now the problem I have is the tape rewinds after the
dump.

I have similar commands running on my 2 other Alpha servers running 4.0e but
using the dump command:
/usr/sbin/dump -0uf /dev/nrmt1h /

and this works!!

How can I solve this problem?

Best Regards
