Anybody get gs7.00 working properly?

Has anybody got ghostscript-7.00 working properly?
If so, what's the trick?

After installing it on V4.0F, I get tiger.ps to work fine, but
alphabet.ps comes out with some of the letters obliterated by
black streaks, and chess.ps has top two black knights blanked out
and bottom white pawns' heads are chopped off.

By the way, I used unixansi.mak modified to have
CFLAGS=-std1 -Olimit 1000 -O2 $(XCFLAGS)
