Trouble with genvmunix

Admins,
I am using an ES40, DU 4.0f patch level 3

Here is the situation. I am trying to install a DS-KGPSA adapter in my system.
I have followed and completed the instructions for installation and all seems
well. The adapter is not currently attached to any devices or switches. I am
in the process of making the adapter available to the OS. The plan is to boot:

boot -fi "genvmunix" <boot device>

then I would use sizer to find the specifications added by the new card to add
to my host configuration file. I would then in turn edit it so that it would
take up the next available buss instead of the one assigned to it by sizer
(keeping my setup the same.) When I booted from the generic kernel I get

INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly. Check for possible errors.
id: cons "/usr/sbin/getty console console vt100"

I also loaded up all of the kernel objects from the OS CD-ROM and remade another
generic kernel. I get the same result from both.

I read what was posted on the boards and found several items listed. Currently I
am going to try booting to single user mode and mounting the file system by
hand, then use sizer, but

I read that if the file system is advfs (which mine is) then this would not
work.

Also, One of the Admins here has a disk labeled DEC Hardware kit ...he told me
he used it last time he installed adapters...what exactly is it used for?

Thanks for your help in advance,

Lee Brewer
