Thanks to the many who replied. Most of the responses suggested how to
mount the files systems so as to make them writable (as well as accessible)
to use vi (which I loathe).
mount - u -w
or better
bcheckrc
swapon -a

 it was suggested
to
export TERM; TERM=vt100 and then set the EDITOR variable so I could use the
editor, but I couldn't get either vi nor emacs to work properly for me so in
the end I used ed (yuk!)
after all, all I had to do was to change a "1" to a "3" in rc.config.

I don't understand why
ed didn't work in single user mode without having to mount file systems. It
certainly worked 20 years ago with Berkeley 4.1!

But what might have been the most useful, which I didn't get a chance to try
was to login in the failsafe mode, the suggestion being that the environment
would be more familiar.
