Most of the responses called for booting from CD and modifying the passwd
file to remove the root password.
Probably the cleanest suggestion was to boot from CD and edit /etc/rc.config
to modify SECURE_CONSOLE, since that would work regardless of what type of
security is in place.
Thanks to all who responded. My curiosity is now satisfied (at least about
this issue).
