I have an AlphaServer 2100 5/250 running Digital Unix 4.0D with two CPUs
and 512 MB of memory. It is only used as a primary mail server and DNS
server. Over the past several months it has slowed down to a crawl.
I've searched and searched for errors and problems and can not figure out
what is wrong. Swap and memory both look fine.
Top shows no major processing eating up CPU and the load is almost always
very low.
Monitor shows only two odd items. The first is that the CPU's are very
frequently in WAIT state. The second is that one drive (a 10,000 RPM 18
gig drive for /usr) is very heavily used, mostly since this is where mail
is stored and where POP clients grab their mail. The system has about 100
users who get mail through it via POP clients.
I see no SCSI errors, no errors in the messages log or binary logs, and no
processing running away.
Any advice what I should look at next?
