Hi,
I want to try to print to a label printer over a WAN. This WAN seems to
have a feature that noone can pin down whereby the queue goes into a wait
state for a random amount of time before continuing. Thus for the same
print job the output may come out instantaneously or it may take half an
hour. The printer vendor has supplied us with a fix based on a perl script.
On our HP systems using SYSV lpsched this perl script replaces the printer
interface file in the /var/spool/lp/interface directory. Can anyone tell me
how I might get this perl script into the BSD system used on Tru64.
The reason I ask is that although the fix works for the HP kit it's slow.
We can get it to produce about 10-15 labels per minute. Using my trusty
Alphastation 500/500-Tru645.0A I've got upto 40 labels per minute which
is about the rate we need to satisfy customer requirements.
BTW the perl script works by opening socket connections and carefully
controlling how the spool data is transferred.
I tried changing the lp= entry in printcap to point to the perl script
which seems to work on a local unit but I'm told it prints garbage at the
remote end. The printer is 130 miles away from the server.
Any pointers appreciated.
TIA
Joe
