slightly less dead system that won't boot:

This is a kind of continuation of my last question. which was "interesting
system ....." OK, I've copied everything back from a backup dumped out to
a drive attached to the system (except osf_boot which came from 4.0e CD)
Now my question/problem is this:

When the system boots normally to vmunix or by command to genvmunix, it
throws out errors about 'nowhere to put headers' or 'invalid stack'
depending on which you boot to. I then had a nervous breakdown and copied
both kernels off of the install CD and got it to boot up that way. <--- I'm
sure that this isn't the best thing to do. But, after numerous reported
errors while booting, I have a login prompt on the console. But, I can't
log into the system. It just displays something about 'amnesiac terminal'
and 'Login:' no matter what you type. My intention was to build a kernel
and get it running, but I can't get into the system to do so :-( What next.

I'll post specific details about the errors if needed. But, right now I'm
just concerned with getting some kind of working kernel.
