Original post

Hi,

When I run scu show edt, parts of the output show

    Device: DATA ROUTER Bus: 6, Target: 4, Lun: 0, Type: Array Controller
    Device: TZ89 Bus: 6, Target: 4, Lun: 5, Type: Sequential Access
    Device: TZ89 Bus: 6, Target: 4, Lun: 6, Type: Sequential Access

When I trry MAKEDEV tzf52, it can not create the device with the following error:

# ./MAKEDEV tzf52
MAKEDEV: special file(s) for tzf52:
MAKEDEV: unknown device in: tzf52

Solution:

Sorry for being late and thanks to all who responded especially Alan who pointed out that MAKEDEV does not create non-zero LUN tape devices and I am attaching his reply for completeness. In the end, I had to do what Alan suggested and created the devices using mknod using the following formula and all now work:

(LUN x 64) + (Target ID x 1024) + (Bus # x 16384) + (Density x 2) + rewind

where
rewind = 0
no_rewind = 1

Density:

        low = (0x2)
        high = (1x2)
        med = (2x2)
        aux = (3x2)

        I don't think any version of MAKEDEV supports tapes at
        non-zero logical unit numbers. My limited experience
        with non-zero tape LUNs is that a reboot will create
        them. You can also read the tz and SCSI manual page
        to see how to construct the minor device numbers for
        tapes and use mknod by hand.
