upgrade to 4.0 or 5.1 ?

I take the opportunity from the following question when

to ask a more general question.

I have a handful (half a handful) of Alphas on which I still run DU 3.2.
I kept 3.2 because I run some (Fortran) s/w of mine which I compiled there.

Now I have half an intention or need to upgrade, but conflicting motivations.

   - one possibility would be to upgrade to Tru64 5.1. The advantage of
this would be that one colleague here has already a system with such
version. Therefore I could test my s/w on his machine beforehand.

   - the other possibility is to upgrade to Tru64 4.0x. I will need to
run another s/w package (the XMM SAS, for those who know), and that
was announced for 4.0d (I believe, the info has disappeared from
     their home page).

I heard that 5.x is less stable than 4.0x. Also I noticed that my colleague
has this "cluster" business installed on his machine (I thought it was just a
slipshod installation by the person who came to do it, but now I realize it
might be an [annoying] "feature").

What are the probability that 4.0d compiled binaries will run without problems
under 5.1 ? What are the main differences between 4.0d and 5.1 ?

  - for one thing I realized that the path of device files in /dev
changed some time between 3.2 and 5.1. Since some of my routines
rely on that, I need to make some changes. When did that change
    exactly ?

  - I also realised that sometime there was a change from xdm (3.2) to
CDE (5.1). We use CDE on our Suns here, but are planning to junk it
as we'd move to Linux. When did such change occur ?

Any further information or suggestion will be appreciated.
