Summary - slightly less dead system that won't boot:

Thanks to all who replied, and even more thanks to those who replied and
told me how dumb I was ;-) OK, the issue was that I had a dead backup tape
which I'd previously dumped to another hard drive into a directory oddly
called 'Backup'. Ironic, huh?

Anyway, when we lost our software, config (very important), and OS on the
root drive I simply replaced the drive with a nice and cheap WD Enterprise
and began restoring by booting from the install CD, skipping the graphical
stuff and getting back to the shell. Then I created some directories in the
temp folder on which I'd be mounting the 2 disks. I partitioned and
formatted the / disk and then mounted them both. Then I copied all of the
stuff from the 'Backup' folder onto the appropriate partitions of rrz0
(using cp -Rfp, not -rfp). At first I rebooted the system and it couldn't
find osf_boot (not in 'Backup'.) So, I copied it from install CD. This
opend up a whole new can of worms, the kernels for some reason wouldn't
work. The kernel seemed to be messed up and wouldn't let the system boot
properly. So, I posted the above and got some great replys. It turned out
that the solution for me wasn't to do a complete reinstall. I just copied
the generic kernel from install cd, got the system up in single user,
rebuilt a kernel, and viola! Then I had to copy some of the binaries from
/sbin on the CD to get it into an upgradeable condition. But, it worked.
My configuration for the app is good and the system is working fine. I've
verified that the app does work with 4.0G and now we can shop for a new
alpha. I've learned a lot of stuff about system utils during this process
and also asked a lot of dumb questions!

Thanks, you guys are the best! Ohhh yeah, if anyone has actually read this
whole summary and has info or contact info on any good vendors for an
immediate XP1000 purchase, I'd appreciate the chance to save some $$$ or
even just compare prices to make sure our poor engineer doesn't get ripped
off again ;-)
