cdrom problem/disabled via the RUN/STOP switch

After a failed attempt to boot from a Redhat Alpha 7.0 installation cdrom
on an Alpha Personal Workstation 433 the cdrom is no longer
operational. Although I can see the device at the console prompt, when
attempting to boot from it I get a messages saying "no media present or is
disabled via the RUN/STOP switch." If I boot Tru64 from disk and then try
to mount the cdrom I get an i/o error. Is this just a weird coincidence
that the failure occured during an attempt to install Linux? Does this
mean the cdrom is dead? How can I re-enable the device?

Thanks in advance for any help.
