multi pathing under V5.1

Looking for information on multi pathing to storage devices under V5.1.

1. How does the fail over work? Whether one link has to fail for it to
fail over or getting read/write errors on a path is enough to fail
over?
2. Is load balancing over multiple paths a feature in V5.1?
