Hello;
I got plenty of suggestions from people on the list. Special thanx to
alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com, Selden E Ball Jr (seb_at_lns62.lns.cornell.edu), and
Thomas Blinn (tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com) for general SCSI info and other
specific issues.
The original problem was that from time to time I got errors when using the
drive. tepex usually failed as well somewhere along its way, too (usually
during "Writing and reading past the end of media" test). I did not know if
it drive drive, SCSI controller or configuration problem.
Armed with knowledge suplied by above people I played with any possible,
software, and hardware configuration (switches, cabling, IDs, parameters,
etc.) Finally it occurred that the SCSI controller 3X-KZPCA-AA does NOT
support configuration when it is in the middle of a SCSI bus (devices are
connected both to external and internal connectors of the controller). But it
had not stop the controller's manufacturer from including detailed directions
how to put it into such a config. My advise is - do not try it at home. So I
bought a short internal SCSI cable, a short external SCSI cable, and a SCSI
sex changer (hard to get). Then I mounted the sex changer at one of SCSI
breaks-troughs at the back of the machine, run the internal cable from disk
cage SCSI output to the sex changer, and connected the library to the
external side of the sex changer. It is fine now.
