Alright. I feel proud. I actually figured out the problems without reading any of the MANY replies I received. After reading the replies I find that just about everyone said the same thing. A misconfigured network. Actually, the network was configured nicely...it's just that there are no active network connections to the server yet!! I knew that ahead of time, I just didn't realize Unix really REALLY doesn't like not being hooked up to the network it was set up for. What I had to do was go back into failsafe mode, and remove any trace of network settings--mostly just the /etc/hosts file had to be emptied of everything but the localhost 127.0.0.1 line. And now it works just great. Thanks to everyone who replied. =) Bye
