tape drive auto-eject

I have a SONY SDT-9000, repackaged by Artecon, on an alphastation 500,
running 4.0f. the tape auto-ejects after rewinding, which creates quite a
problem as the machine is across campus.
is there a way to prevent the tape from ejecting? besides ducktape over
the slot...
