clariffication: tape drive auto-eject

all filesystems are UFS

the way backups work is several partitions on a couple of machines are
backed up to single tape every night, the tape is rewound, then the next
day the the same commands are run again
i know we should switch tapes, but that gets expensive
currently i'm looking for the manual for the drive, in print and online,
i've got some things to try...
