changing graphics cards

I have a DPW500a running Tru64 v5.0A. The graphics card it has been running
with is an Elsa Gloria Synergy (4D10T) but it is failing - a graphics memory
problem I think. I can still see the SRM console at bootup but I get garbage
running X (the garbage increased to fill more and more of the screen over
the last couple of weeks). I have an old 3D30 card that came with the
machine originally. I tried just putting the old card back but I cannot get
the SRM console. When I put the 4D10T card in I remember the kernel was
rebuilt during the installation process. Do I need to rebuild the kernel
before installing the 3D30 card? Any advise will be apreciated.

Also if anybody has any suggestions for a new low end graphics card I would
like to hear?

Thanks,

Simon Rees
