You're right, the rolling upgrades are a V5.x TruCluster Server feature.
For your older V4.x ASE cluster, the method you describe should just work, unless the patch documentation explicitly describes something else as the right method. With the older ASE clusters, the cluster nodes are really quite independent of one another and almost all of the "smarts" is in the failover services (ASE manager). As long as you have shown in the past that things fail over if you shut a system down and leave it down for some time (e.g., to do stand-alone backups or the like or to do hardware maintenance), you should be golden. Unless the patch kit explicitly says you have to "uncluster" the systems and then re-make the cluster after the patching, you should just be able to update each
member one at a time as you describe.
