Thanks to all the responses - too numerous to name 'em all. I'm getting set
to do the battery change tonight.
My original question asked for advise/info/etc. on changing an HSZ40 cache
battery for a controller that's not in a dual-redundant configuration. The
steps are generally:
* Shutdown the system
* Power off the system
* Shutdown the controller (SHUTDOWN THIS_CONTROLLER). This will flush
the cache.
* Power off the controller
* Pull out the cache module and replace the battery
* Power on the controller
* It might be necessary to do a CLEAR CACHE_ERRORS
* It'll take awhile for the battery to charge up
Several people mentioned saving the controller configuration before doing
this since there's a chance it could be lost. I'm not sure how to do this.
With more recent HSOF versions there's a SAVE_CONFIGURATION option
available with the INITIALIZE command, but I don't see this being an option
with my prehistoric HSZ40. Does anyone know of a way to save the
configuration other than writing it down on a piece of paper? BTW, I assume
that if I did lose the configuration I'd be able to manually reenter it all
without losing any of the data on my raid sets. (This would include using
the INITIALIZE command, which presumably is just dealing with metadata and
not actually blowing away all the data!)
It was also pointed out to be careful how you dispose of the batteries.
They are sealed Lead-Acid and must be disposed of in accordance
with Hazardous Material Guidelines local to your area.
