Hi!
First of all, thanks for the replies. (Too many to name each people
here.) The main
consensus was very valuable for me, and can be summarized as
follows.
- The maximum length of the cable, which can be ordered from Compaq
is 50 meters,
but cables from other manufacturers, which meet the standards of
short wave FC
specifications may be used, in which case the maximum distance
between two
devices can be up to 200 / 500 meters. (There were different
responses regarding
this, but only one stated 200 m, many stated 500 m; but the one,
who stated 200 m
gave a link to a Compaq reference guide, which anyway I haven't
read through:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/san/AA-RMPNC-TE.pdf
)
- According to several responses and to Brocade's web site, the
maximum distance
may even be more than 100 kilometers(!), but in this case long
wave equipment must
be used, which is significantly more expensive than short wave
equipment. In addition,
Compaq does not sell long wave cables. (But long wave GBICs can be
ordered.)
One of the responses gave me a hint: these "unsupported" extra
configurations can
be made supported by Compaq. The keyword is Compaq Custom
Systems...
Summary of the addendum: the GBIC is built into both the FC HBA and
the HSG. But
this raises another issue: how can you then use long wave cables and
equipment
(i.e. FC switch(es) with long wave GBICs) to make a SAN config with
HSGs?
Thanks all of you very much again for your help!
Regards,
Nagyak
