Chalk it up to overwork in solitude (like many others, I'm sure, I work
alone to keep this research department's (Phys Ocean.) computing running -
machines, networks, people) - in fact, it *was* something I'd changed,
accidentally, yesterday, when in the middle of too many things; one of the
aforementioned boxes ('wessex') had run out of swap and started killing
off daemons, and I'd fallen back on a bad habit in the case of nfs for
restarting them (using nfssetup instead of the scripts in /sbin/init.d) -
fine if you type the right answers... embarassing for an ostensibly
experienced person. Eventually, that machine had to be rebooted... but
rc.config had already been messed up at that point. With such a
multi-variate problem, the obvious cause wasn't so obvious until I'd
discounted the non-obvious later this afternoon.
A fire alarm in the middle of this crisis today (1hr outside in the
heat...), and then a KVM switch through which all seven of our UNIX boxes'
consoles funnel going bad (making orchestrated reboots a real chore...),
- it had to be replaced before I could even reboot our UNIX cluster -
delayed this acknowledgement.
