Thanks to everyone, alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com, jim caldwell, Selden E Ball Jr,
Udo de Boer, Phil Baldwin.

It was unanimous the its a hardware issue. I removed the cover and checked
all the pci devices, hds etc. and rebooted the system and it booted up just
fine. I will run >>>test now and see what it says and take it up and down
about 20 times to ensure its ok.

Alan gave me some useful info which I will pass along for others - thanks
Alan!!

Sounds like a hardware problem. According to the block
diagram I have the Pchip seems to be the interface between
the PCI bus, memory (Dchips) and the Cchip. According to
another source the Pchip contains the error detection
logic to report errors in PCI transctions. Could be a
bad PCI widget, something else on the I/O bus. Lots of
things to seem to hand off that; the 4 PCI slots, the
two Ethernet adapters, the USB, serial ports, parallel
        ports, etc.

Also Seldon passed along a useful link.
Mike,

According to the Technical Journal at
http://csa.compaq.com/CTJ_Article_78_July.html
the Pchip is involved in PCI control.

You might check to make sure all the PCI (and other) cards are fully seated.
Something might have vibrated loose in shipping.

If that doesn't fix anything, call Compaq (or your reseller)
and have it repaired/replaced under warrantee.

I hope this helps a little.
