Colour depth on CDE

Managers,

I'm running 4.0F on a 433Au workstation. There have been a few summaries in the past on how to change the CDE colour depth, which have so far failed for me.I have a ZLXp2-EV5 graphics card with the card settings set to a resolution of 1024x768 (which is fine for me). The colour depth I am achieving is 8 (with a default installation). The card has 2MB memory (I think - see below). Essentially I want to improve the screen colour display to whatever my card will achieve. Previous summaries refer to the Xservers file in /usr/dt/config/Xservers, /etc/dt/config/Xservers & /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers and the /usr/var/X11/XServer.conf file, specifying options for -depth, TrueColor, -vclass etc, none of which seem to increase the colour depth (although TrueColour seems to increase the colour depth slightly) after a stop/start of the X server (S95 script).

Could the problem be that my card is not capable (at this resolution-due to memory) of increasing by more than 8-bit ? - I've tried lower res but this has no increase in depth. The output from xdypinfo (below) has various visual id's - are these the combinations possible with the card ?

Does anyone have a definitive answer on this (ie which files/options to set for cde, output of xdpyinfo, card capabilities), documentation in this area seems to be somewhat lacking.

Regards
