Unfortunately I received only five reactions on my question on experiences
with GS-Series.
It appears the GS-series machine are particularly used for large Data
warehouse solutions (some over 25Tb per system). The main reason for buying
this kind of machines was the need for performance and throughput on a level
that the older turbolaser 8x00 series and GS140 where not able to deliver.
Although most respondents are satisfied with the improved performance of the
new machines there was one respondent who described a case in which their
GS140 delivered better performance than their GS160 with their particular
database (sybase) application. In this particular case the GS140 was
equipped with 10 CPU's and 12 Gb RAM, but the respondent didn't mention any
details on the configuration of the GS160 he compared the GS140 with.
We ourselves have bought 3 GS-series (GS80, GS160 and GS320) and are (until
now) quite satisfied. We are using one of them in a clustered configuration
and we have seen some problems there, but with the release of Patchkit3 for
Tru64 Unix v5.1 and some manual patche for our particular configuration
these probles (crashes) seem to be solved.
I received three interesting documents on the GS160 of one of the
respondents. If anyone is interested you can send me a mail and I will
forward them to you.

Gert-Jan Hilbrands
*** Original Question :
Hi managers,
We are interested in the experiences throughout the world with the
Alphaserver GS-series. In what situations (applications) are they being
used
and is it what you expected it to be ?
Reason for this question is that we have been running some GS-series
ourselves and are curious about the opinions of other people.
