hello mgrs:

my o/s is 4.0F. i have a directory that contains upwards of 750,000 files. the machine that these files are on, are nfs mounted to ~60 other machines. so these 60 machines r/w to the this 1 machine. yes, i know that this isn't advisable, but...

my question is, if there were only maybe 250,000 files versus 750,000, how much performance difference would i see? what i'm trying to ask is, does the kernel(ls/cp/rm), work harder finding a file with a significant increase in the # of totals files versus a small # total files in a directory?
