It appears named is release 8.2.2-P5 although the comments in my
/etc/named/host.db file at the top say its version 4.9.3.P1 which is a
bit confusing to me. I looked around for a newer prototype to see if
they had updated the comments but I could not find an 8.2.2 prototype
for the host.db file. Maybe there isn't one and I just have legacy
comments at the top of my host.db file. What do you think about this?
Has anyone made the upgrade to the latest and greatest release? Is
this recomended or not recomended? Will I have to convert the format of
my current DNS entries to a newer format if I do upgrade?

There are two versions. The long standing verion is 8 with the latest
release of 8.2.5. The latest version of bind is 9.x.x. Both work
well
but there are more updates with version 9 than there are with version
8. Check www.isc.org for the details.

If you run named with the '-v' switch you get back the version number.
On
one of my Tru64 V5.1 systems:
# /sbin/named -v
named 8.2.2-P5-plus-CA-2000-20-plus-CA-2001-02
#/sbin/named -v
named 8.2.2-P5 <<<<<< I see this - K. Criss
How come I don't have
the extra version stuff?
I am patch kit-003.
Looks like 8.2.2 with some patches. You can find the latest version
at
'
http://www.isc.org', which lists 9.1.3 as the current release in the
v9
family and 8.2.4 as the current production release in the v8.x chain.
Unless there are some features in BIND9 that you really need I would
just
stick with BIND8 for now. The current Compaq-supported version works
just
fine for us, but make sure you keep up with the security patches!

Of course the Q may have done security fixes to it since then. But
this, in general,
is not a recommended version. Visit
http://www.isc.org/ to get the
latest; either
8.2.4 in the 8 series, or 9.1.3 in the 9 series if you want
latest/greatest.
You should consult the CERT advisories on Bind for the Compaq patch
announcements
or whatever for Bind. Remember Compaq will presumably support their
fixed versions
of the ISC Bind.
