Patching in the middle

Help !!!

I just installed patch kit3 on a Tru64 5.1 but some serious problems left me in the middle(I had already got succeeded on anther machine with same os version, this is the 2nd box)

The precedure is:
After dupatch installed all patches and exit, I started to build the new kernal with doconfig. But to my surprise, it reported:

    * Makefile:773: target `assym.s' given more than once in the same rule.
    * Makefile:794: *** Recursive variable `target_machine' references itself (eventually). Stop.

and suspected some layered products confliction with the base system, which I haven't. It then offered to continue with building a base system kernal only. But even I said yes, it still didn't continue.

I then stopped the attempt of creating a new kernal, and just reboot, but the startup procedure got stuck (afterwards I found it's S22prpasswdd, and some more which I'm still looking for)

I also tried to reverse the patch installation, but to my surprise again, after starting dupatch, shell reported:
    * syntax error at line 2346, 'end of file' unexpected.
but this is the same dupatch file I used for installing the patch !

Could anybody get me out, hopefully I don't have to reinstall the whole system.

Best regards,

Alan Volker
