The problem was at the side of the new network swtiches.
We have VLANs... The switch ports, had been made as Protocol based VLAN. "DEC LAT" had been selected as the protocol, Bu it was wrong (Yes books are not written correctly anymore :) ) It should be "DEC other", This was enough
By the way, compaq does not suggest to use the autonegotiate mode . Servers (Unix & terminal servers) must be set to a particular value.. at the server side and the switch side ...
