NFS oddities

Hi All,

This week all our machines seemed to be confused as to which NFS clients
they were exporting directories to, resulting in client hangs and server
timeouts. 'showmount -a' on almost any NFS server gave results in
disagreement with 'df' on the supposed clients, and /var/adm/mountdtab
contained a different set of machine names.

Most machines are fixed by clearing mountdtab and rebooting, but I have
one 5.0 box (artoo) on which 'showmount -a' lists a machine (luke) that
is down. mountdtab did not exist, so I 'touch'ed it and rebooted
artoo. However, 'showmount -a' still lists luke after the reboot.
Where is this information held, and how do I clear it?

When artoo went down, a 4.0F box (obiwan, the NIS master) started giving
errors such as "NFS3 server artoo not responding still trying" when e.g.
'df' was used. Neither obiwan nor any other machine was mounting
anything from artoo, and had not done so for ~18 hours since I took all
the home directories off artoo on to obiwan. artoo itself was not
mounting anything from obiwan or any other machine, though it usually
mounts /usr/local from obiwan.

Please help, I'm very confused.

Andy
