A friend of mine sent me a quote she'd received for a tru64/XP-1000 system
they are thinking of ordering and asked me to review it. The quoted
system contains a KZPBA-CA controller with a BN38 connector to a BA-356-KF
disk tower and 4 DS-RZ1FC-VW 36.4GB 10K disks. The disk tower and 36.4
disks, which are in the proprietary hot plug cases, if I recall correctly,
are quite expensive (they are a small commercial outfit and can't
afford too much). I wonder if there might not be a more cost-effective
solution using standard off-the-shelf disks that they should
consider. Their price for the 36.4 GB disks is about what the 160GB
Seagate SCSI disks are going for these days. My question is: would it be
possible to use "generic" 160GB SCSI (or 73 GB SCSI) disks with the
KZPBA-CA controller or some other controller -- if another controller,
which one. Are there any operating system limits/requirements ? --
i.e. they could use 160GB, but they'd have to run 4.0G or 5.1 ? Their
quote contains 4.0E as an OS, which I think they shouldn't go with.
Thanks for any information,
