Again apologies for the delay in summarising....
We have at last fixed this problem !! It turned out to be a typo error in
our /etc/inet.local file, so that in fact the lan_config command was never
actually running oops !!!!
Most responses thought it was related to the setting (or not) of the network
card into full duplex mode as it proved to be.
Many thanks to Compaq support for giving us the
hwmgr -get attr -cat network
command. This actually enabled us to see that to our surprise, the cards
were running half duplex even though we thought we had set them to full.
The network is now running like a dream !!

We are seeing very slow network performance between ES40's and a Cisco
switch. We have checke d all the usual suspects i.e. checked that the
switch and the DE600 are both set for 100MBit/s full-duplex etc... But
we still only seem to be able to get 2Mbytes/s at most. Most transfers
are large file transfers via NFS. I don't think it is relevant but these
nodes are clustered - V5.1 Patch Kit 3.
I have heard of various problems between certain network cards and
certain switches, does anyone know of any issues when connecting
DE600's to Cisco switches. Eventually we are to move to Gigabit but for
the moment we are having to struggle on good old 100BaseT.
