I say that this is really bad news for Tru64. I mean,
why would a company dump it's own Unix for someone
elses? Remember when Sun got Coherent Unix? They ended
up dumping it.. and sticking to SunOS/Solaris. And
here we are.. our favorite version of Unix being sold
do the dogs. They will just take what they want, and
throw the rest in the dustbin. This is not good for
any Tru64 customer. And think about the VMS or Tandem
customers.. I'm willing to bet that HP will just push
people off of VMS and consume the Tandem business.
Tru64 will probably be supported until the
transition is complete. I would not doubt it if 5.1A
is one of the last releases. And I would not hold
Compaq's claim to continued support for Tru64/Alpha
till 2007 to be truthful at all. That would cost too
much overhead for HP, and besides.. 15,000 people will
not have a job because of this.. how many do you think
will be from the Tru64, VMS, or Tandem groups? My big
question is how are customers reacting? I'm just an
enthusiast of Tru64 and Alpha.. and I'm pretty upset..
I can't imagine how people who have recently bought
Alpha systems feel, especially now!
