Thanks to Rochelle Lauer, Graham Allan and Ann Majeske for their help.
All said that I can just enable the shadow feature of enhanced security to
do the password policy stuff I was after.
All also cautioned the use of enhanced security with NIS and that there were
some traps for young players :)
Graham mentioned using a 3rd party utility called npasswd which does
password policy type checks. It's a replacement for passwd and can be found
by using your favourite search engine.
I believe I'll go for the npasswd option as it's mostly less work. Also
there's still telnet and rlogin/rsh turned on for the boxen here and I've
suggested to management that no amount of strong passwords is worth anything
if they're flying about in clear text. They're finally behind my push to
force everyone to use OpenSSH which has been installed here for some time.
