howdy,
well enabling the XDMCP feature of my eXcursion X windows server
software did the trick. the general "broadcast" feature didn't work, but
I used the option of pointing it at my Alpha/Tru64 server and the CDE
login box comes up in its own window. It also now disconnects cleanly.
thanks to all who responded.
