filesharing alternatives to NFS

        Hello


        We are looking for acceptable alternatives to NFS for filesharing.
        One major problem with NFS is that it is not suitable for an environment
        where you have clients on which you do not have control
        over the root account.
        One alternative is AFS but the current status of AFS is a bit unclear to us.
        Can anyone recomend a secure alternative to NFS ?
