below is my call to this very useful forum
######################################################################################################
we have a DEC4100 running 4.0F.
When a normal user makes a telnet to the machine, the password is
validated, but the user is thrown out with "no directory"

Digital UNIX (modux001.mobile.debis.de) (ttyp5)

login: dshsm30
Password:
Login incorrect
login: dshsm30

Last login: Tue Sep 18 21:50:41 from modux005.mobile.

No directory!
Connection closed by foreign host.

The same is with "su - user" from root account.
If root makes only su user, we get

No shell!

The /etc/passwd was untouched, the error arised yesterday evening,
We checked the /.sh_history, but did not find anything strange.
