Many thanks to those who responded so quickly. Many suggested that it's as
quick to perform each installation individually - there is a reason for us
wanting to do it our way, we can automate the install from a series of
scripts.
Anyway I sort of answered my own question once I had done a little more
research. I suddenly remembered that if you use btcreate to create a system
image and then restore that to another system, it doesn't increment the disk
names but starts them from zero again, just how I wanted. I had a look at
the btextract script a saw how it did it using a combination of dn_setup and
dsfmgr. The dn_setup is also a script so it's possible to see what that's
doing.
Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel, I think I will use the btcreate
method.
