weird DNS problem

Our AS1200 with Tru64 5.0A is running as a Baan/Oracle test
system. Additionally it is secondary DNS. bind version is
8.2.4-REL instead of the 4.x provided by Compaq.

The system has one ee network card. bind is running on an alias
address of ee0, /etc/resolv.conf is set to the alias and a second
system (the primary dns). nslookup works ok, and other systems
can use the nameserver without trouble.

Not so the machine itself: while nslookup works, everything else
(ping/telnet/whatever) gives "unknown host" without any delay.
It seems to me that the system does not know where to resolve.

What did I do wrong?
