Can SSL encrypt only text ?

I'm running Apache with SSL. The performance noticeably decreases, when
enable it (SSL). Is there a way to set SSL to encrypt only text (not images
etc.).
I know about "https and http", but it doesn't work for me (large Java
application), so is there any other way, for ex. encryption based on mime
types ?
