This issue was finally fixed by rerunning mailsetup and answering all
the questions from scratch. Compaq did not know why this quit working
but sendmail stopped translating the aliases for all emails not just the
ones that were numeric. After mailsetup was done, everything worked
fine.
I had a various replies of things to check.
Stan Horowitz said to check the sendmail website www.sendmail.org
John Speno had me check for error messages in /var/adm/messages
Good suggestions but the fix is above. Original question follows:
Original question
>From time to time the application guys have me add email addresses to
the /var/adm/sendmail/aliases file so that the application on my Tru64
4.0d system can send emails to external partners. This has worked fine
up until about a week ago. The entry that he had me add was numeric.
The email is getting a delivery failure back from outlook. I looked in
the help for aliases and searched the database. Is this a known issue
that you can't do this?
The following works
johnsmith_at_mynode:johndoe_at_isp.com this email is sent sucessfully to
johndoe_at_isp.com
The entry i just added which does not work
123456_at_mynode:jasondoe_at_isp.com
This does not work. The application guy said he can change the name and
maybe put a letter on the front but we would like to know why this
fails.
