Our network people had changed our SMTP server and our Unix host files were
still referring to the old server.

It may be that relaying has been blocked. Allowing indiscriminant
relaying means that spammers can use your box for spamming; as a
consequence, most have relaying from unknown locations blocked.
I would look in your 'sendmail.cf' file and look for rules which
produce a "Relay denied" error.
