Thanks to Dr. Thomas Blinn, Todd McGuinness, Alan Davis, Jason Orendorf. I
upgraded to V5.1 and stopped. I will upgrade to V5.1a after the new year
when the new patchkit for V5.1a comes out. I have attached to suggestions
and input provided by everyone. My original question is at the bottom.
Don't bother applying a patch kit before the upgrade; the patches
are over-written by the installupdate anyway.
If you care about minimizing bug concerns, then here's what you can
do:
1) Do the installupdate from V4.0G to V5.1 (as I recall, you can
not go directly to V5.1A from V4.0G anyway, but I'd have to go look
at the release notes / install guide for V5.1A to be sure). Then
make sure the system is running as you expected (reinstall any of
the layered/associated products that have new versions, make sure
you have a good backup on V5.1 including understanding the new way
of naming devices, clean up your system tuning as needed, etc.)
2) Install the most current V5.1 patch kit (since V5.1 is newer
than V4.0G, it already has most of the bug fixes that were in the
V4.0G release, but there are bug fixes in the patch kits for each
of the two releases that fix common defects, and you don't want
to get bitten by bugs that were already fixed in V4.0G by the time
you updated to V5.1). Run for a while on V5.1 to make sure you've
got things stable and that you understand the new system management
tools and the new device naming and so forth.
3) Some time around January 2002, when the first V5.1A patch kit
is available, do the update to V5.1A and THEN INSTALL THE PATCHES.
Since you're probably not going to V5.1A because you need something
that's new in that release (mostly what's new other than assorted
hardware support is the ARMTech software and LAN clusters, and the
LAN clusters had some bugs that will be fixed in the first patch
kit, so if that's what you're after you might want to wait a bit),
you would be better served by getting to V5.1 and getting stable
and some experience, then move to V5.1A (which is a trivial change
once you're at V5.1).

The most painless way is to upgrade to 5.0a then to 5.1a - this is
necessary. If you don't do this you will be sorry. Make backups...
Do a firmware upgrade beforehand as well.
Cheers,

The biggest issue is that any AdvFS domains that you carry
forward won't use the new, improved metadata. It's recommended
to backup/recreate/restore the domains after upgrading. LSM
metadata is updated automatically. You can't import a v5.x LSM
diskgroup onto a v4.x system after the upgrade.

==================
In general, patch kits don't need to be installed before upgrading to
a later version of the OS (since all the files you're modifying during
the patch process will be overwritten again during the installupdate
process). Exceptions to this rule would be patches that affect the
installupdate process itself (check the patch kit README).
One thing I always recommend (and do myself before every installupdate)
is to run a script called allverify written by the Compaq CSC.
This script reports any errors in OS and patch kit installed files. These
errors should be corrected before proceeding with an installupdate.
The script is available from
ftp://xfer-alf.support.compaq.com/to_customer/.

========================================
Hi everyone,
I am looking at upgrading an Alpha 800 from V4.0g to V5.1a.
Does anyone have any advice about the least painless way of doing this?
I know that the latest patch kit for V4.0g should be applied before the
upgrade to V5.1a. Is there any other specifics or gotchas that I should plan
for?
Thanks
