The solution to this problem was that it can't be done with tar. But using cpio will allow me to do exactly this. Many thanks to Bob Bumpus for this solution, and everyone else who responded.

  Subject: TAR Question

I have a situation in which I want to create a .tar file of a group of users home directories on box number 1 and move them to box number 2 to be untarred. The problem is that I don't want any existing files on box number 2 to be overwritten if they are newer than the what's in the tar. But I do want it to overwrite older files. I'm not sure if I am going to run into this problem, and I don't have a real word situation that I can test it in. But in some quick and dirty tests it overwrote all files regardless of the date. Is this possible, or is this the default behavior and I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Thanks in advance....
