Problems with ypbind in Tru64-5.1

Greetings, all,

We are having problems making NIS/YP work on an ES40 running
Tru64-5.1. In particular, ypbind appears to be misbehaving.

We invoked "setup" to configure the system as a client in an existing
NIS domain. The master server is a 4100 running 4.0F and has been
serving clients including Alphas, SGIs, and at least one Sun for a
few years, so we think that side is okay. We added an entry for the
new host to "/var/yp/securenets" on the master, so that should be
okay.

On the 5.1 box (hostname "ve"; short name used in the output below)
we start NIS via /sbin/init.d/nis, and ypbind runs, as output from
"ps -ef" shows:

     root 99856 1 0.0 15:02:21 ?? 0:00.00 \
        /usr/sbin/ypbind -s -S {domainname},{master} -ypsetme

However, after this logins take a over a minute to complete (although
it seems like forever). This login produces the following line in
/var/adm/syslog.dated/current/auth.log:

     Nov 15 15:09:40 ve login: YP can't bind to domain {domainname}

Attempting to do anything with NIS complains that ypbind cannot be
called; for example:

     # ypwhich
ypwhich: can't call ypbind on ve: RPC: Timed out

The output of "rpcinfo -p" shows that ypbind is running:

     # rpcinfo -p
        program vers proto port
         100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
         100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
         100007 2 tcp 817 ypbind
         100007 2 udp 819 ypbind
         100007 1 tcp 817 ypbind
         100007 1 udp 819 ypbind

However, trying to obtain a response from ypbind fails:

     # rpcinfo -t ve 100007 2
     rpcinfo: RPC: Timed out
program 100007 version 2 is not available

     # rpcinfo -t ve 100007 1
     rpcinfo: RPC: Timed out
program 100007 version 1 is not available

     # rpcinfo -u ve 100007 2
     rpcinfo: RPC: Timed out
program 100007 version 2 is not available

     # rpcinfo -u ve 100007 1
     rpcinfo: RPC: Timed out
program 100007 version 1 is not available

We have installed Tru64-5.1 patch kit 3, the latest, so we are current there.

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions or see anything obviously
wrong in the above? Any help will be received gladly.

Of course, I will summarize responses to the list.

Regards,
Eric Sisson
