Here is the background:
An HSG80 inside a DEC 2200 enclosure connected to 3 rackmounted Drive
cages on compaq DS20 with Tru64 and LSM.

The responses:
A single 36GB global spare for your 9/18/36 is possible for Raid5.
With mirroring it has to be the same size.
