the story is going through endless :)
new replies arrived since last one
here you can read them and resolve them
for future tape problems like my one...

the exact problem with the tape was this:
in normal cirmumstances the tape ends
are fixed on two "disks" in the case.
well, one of them released its endpoint.

attention for the experts at compaq :
please skip the next lines.... :)

"If that is an 8mm tape drive (I don't know my TLZ's)
there is a white finger on the left side of the drive (after removing the
drive from whatever shoebox or chassis it is in)
which is part of an exposed electrical switch
that you can press toward the front of the chassis to force it to try to
eject.
I don't remember for sure, but power may need to be on.

The finger is visible through a hole on the left side of the drive.

You may also be able to remove the cover with a TORX screwdriver (available
at hardware stores) and cut free the tape if it is tangled and even destroy
the tape cartridge to remove it piece by piece."

my conclusion sounds like this: to keep data
quite safely and for a long time, and of course
cost efficient, use tape drive. it means -
this type of storage device still remains for a while...

but, think that the information stored on magnetic
tapes must be replaced to the new storage media
- such as RW comp. disk, DVD or even another
tape - as a time passes. I think that the number
of problems - like this - will increase in the future.
so, this is the time to rethink the operation of tape
driver - I belive that most of them have capablity
to manage such kind of defects as a broken tape.
but the type what we have at our site doesn't.
