First, proftpd works fine on True 64 for others. It seems that the
compiling/installing problem on my machine is a very individual problem.
Alternatively
http://freshmeat.net/projects/vsftpd/ was recommended.
The problem was solved by direct installing the binaries of a precompiled
proftpd.
