Summary: 4.0d patches left me unable to login

It took about 5 hours to finally resolve but the solution was to install
the entire bundle of patches all at once. I come from the VMS side of
things and that is definitely not the way I do patches over there.
Thanks to Alan Davis for the hint to do a full backup before patching
and not to just depend on btcreate.

Original problem statement.

Issue: I have been trying to install the 4.0d patch set over the last
couple weeks. On yesterday as I attempted a set of patches, I first ran
the btcreate to get a tape to save myself. I installed a few patches
then a few more. Finally on my last set, after installation when I
tried to log in to the system, it accepts my username and password, then
displays the motd file (login banner) and then immediately takes me back
to the login prompt. After working with this for a while, I tried
running the btextract to go back. This seemed to go just fine but when
I tried to log in again, I got the same thing again. I am unable to log
in from multi-user mode at this point although I am able to get in from
single user mode.

In the course of working with Compaq on this, the first thing we did was
blast out all the patches in the set at once, this did not work as we
got the same message. The last thing we encountered is a memory fault
(coredump) when trying to su to a user from single user mode after
running bcheckrc with root using the /bin/ksh shell.

If anyone has any suggestions or has seen anything like this before
please let me know. As a personal aside, I do not agree with the idea
of installing an aggregate patch kit all at once. I know I already
found that Filesystem patch 00682.00 Fix for NFS problem, left me unable
to get in teh system during the first round of patch installs about 2
weeks ago. It was only after removing 50 odd patches I had put on and
installing them a few at a time that I was able to determine the problem
patch. If anyone else has opinions on the best way to install patches,
I welcome those opinions too.
